Although the Material Plane is a world abundant with life and rich in energy resources, it contains only a small fraction of Planet M's total energy. The majority exists within the Dreaming, with dimensional pores facilitating a steady flow between planes. Etherium, or energy in its "purest" form, is altered when entering the Material Plane, taking on numerous forms such as heat, light, electricity, and according to some - life force. While these sources of energy amply provide for the needs of Planet M's inhabitants, it is known that harnessing Etherium itself would yield even greater returns.

This became a reality when civilization discovered the Etherium Nexus, a focal point akin to a dimensional pore - only many times larger - where pure energy gathers, and gushes up from the Dreaming. Only a handful have ever been found, and without fail those who have claimed them have reaped enormous benefits, even to the effect of shifting the balance of power throughout the world. The Laconian Federation was built on top of a Nexus, and it is likely the primary reason it has maintained its position as the largest and most powerful nation in the world.

Etherium can be harvested in a number of ways, from crystallization to direct conduction using specialized generators. In spite of its near limitless bounty, Etherium does present a number of dangers. Direct and prolonged exposure has effects similar to intense radiation, warping or killing living tissues. Because of this, the nations of the world have imposed strict regulations on its usage. Any Etherium Nexus discovered must be registered under international law.
